RESI’s Fall 2011 Economic Outlook Conference at Towson University

September 7, 2011

Raquel Frye

It’s a busy time here at RESI as preparations for the November 9th Economic Outlook Conference get underway.  This conference is particularly exciting for us since it will be the first time since 1999 that it is hosted on campus.  We are really looking to hosting the event this year and taking advantage of the newest building on campus – the West Village Commons building.  Implications of the 2010 Census Data will be the central focus of the day with a variety of experts weighing in on the impact of the data on matters such as government services, the business community, workforce development and higher education.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

Ladies and Gentlemen Start Your Engines: Economic Impact of the Baltimore Grand Prix

August 29, 2011

Daraius

Soon the roar of Grand Prix racing will fill the streets of Baltimore over Labor Day weekend under the auspices of the IZOD IndyCar series.  In total, there are 19 scheduled races this year of which five are held on the streets of their host city rather than a speedway.  While there has been some controversy surrounding this event, it is my opinion that this event will provide a boost to the City’s name and bottom line.

As it stands, Baltimore City is already becoming a destination choice among many visitors.  Events such as the Baltimore Running Festival, various soccer and lacrosse matches and Artscape provide diverse activities for visitors.  In addition, with the presence of the Orioles, Ravens, the Hippodrome Theater and various museums, there are plenty of opportunities for visitors to enjoy Baltimore’s cultural, recreational and entertainment offerings.

According to the Economic Impact Report published by Baltimore Racing Development, LLC, Baltimore’s Grand Prix and related events are slated to bring over 100,000 visitors to the City.  Visitors attending the event are expected to generate over $70 million in spending on things such as hotel rooms, food and beverage, transportation and other entertainment. In addition, the City is expected to gain $2.2 million dollars in tax revenues.

While the three day event has the potential to bring in a lot of new visitors to the area for the event, the real impact will be in terms of the marketing and outreach for the City of Baltimore. For example, races will be broadcast to a national and international audience.  The media exposure and branding of the City as a Grand Prix destination will have long-lasting and reverberating effects.   In a report regarding the San Jose Grand Prix, the estimated value of media exposure for that city was valued at $4.6 million.  Baltimore’s Grand Prix is expected to have a larger audience and races will get TV coverage on major networks such as ABC and ESPN.  In addition to the race coverage, a documentary based on the behind-the-scenes efforts to put on the race will be broadcast on September 11th.

If Baltimore is lucky, the city’s experience will mirror the success of the Long Beach Grand Prix.  The Long Beach event, which began as a small Formula 5000 street race, recently celebrated its 38th straight year and brings more than 200,000 spectators to the area.  I believe Baltimore has the ability to succeed in this venture.  Some of the City’s best landmarks and spectacular views—including the inner harbor and Camden Yards—will be front and center during the whole event.  I would be surprised if that wasn’t enough to put Baltimore on many people’s radar.

See you at MACO!

August 11, 2011

Bobbie

Every year, the Division of Economic and Community Outreach (DECO) looks forward  to the Maryland Association of Counties (MACO) conference.  This annual 2-day meeting provides us with a unique opportunity to interact with almost all of our state and local government partners.  Throughout the year we work with over 30 different state and local entities on projects ranging from mapping applications to fiscal impact studies.  This year we will be located in the GIS Discovery Zone at booths #531 and #532.

In addition to great networking and exciting presentations on how government can be more efficient and better serve the citizens of Maryland, our team looks forward to the booth decorating contest which we won last year (for Best State Booth).  This year’s theme is “Pirates of the Chesapeake” and we have some creative and exciting pirate themed ideas in store for our visitors.  While we don’t want to give away too much, take a look at the teaser below.  Looking forward to seeing you down at the shore!

Guest Blogger: The 2011 Esri International User Conference Experience

July 21, 2011

Ken Juengling

In my role as Project Manager for the Center for GIS, I am involved in many interesting efforts that leverage GIS technology to solve critical issues in today’s ever changing world.  Having just gotten back from the premier GIS conference, the Esri International User Conference, I feel a little overwhelmed – as I do every time I get back – and energized by Jack Dangermond’s plenary session that opened the conference.

Here are a few of my thoughts from the conference, which attracted over 15,000 attendees (about 5,000 were there for the first-time!).

Hopefully, you’ll have the opportunity to attend next year’s User Conference, which happens July 23-27, 2012.

Guest Blogger: 2011 DECO Service Awards Breakfast

June 27, 2011

Cindy Knight

Once again DECO gathered together on June 22, 2011(in fine fashion I might add) to participate in one of our favorite activities together…Eating.  However this meeting of the minds and stomachs served a very special purpose; to honor and celebrate our colleagues who had reached their longevity milestones of five and ten years of service to the Division of Economic and Community Outreach and Towson University.

The day started bright and early in the Minnegan room.  Daraius Irani got the program started with a rousing, engaging, and extremely funny welcome, and then we dined on a delicious breakfast and enjoyed each other’s company.  After breakfast, Dan Leonard our keynote speaker captured our attention with his encouraging and thoughtful words regarding the contributions DECO has provided to the University.  Dan congratulated everyone because the phrase “That’s not my job” does not reside in the DECO vocabulary.

DECO Staff in the Breakfast Line

Next we heard from Vice President Dyan Brasington who motivated and congratulated the honorees on reaching this significant milestone in their careers.  After the speakers we were onto the fun part, the Service Awards.  The following staff members were recognized:

5 years

George Edmonds, Raquel Frye, Lance Konig, Robert Telewicz, Carol Williams

10 Years

Michael Bentivegna, Marina Gendlina, Ruslana Kachay, Sharyn Grove, Linda Natale, Erin Nueslein

After we completed the Service Awards we transitioned into The Annual Awards.  This was the first year DECO has had the Annual Awards.   There are two categories of Awards:  the Who’s Who awards and the Excellence Award.

The Who’s Who awards are peer nominated and peer elected :

Rising Star Award- recognizes a DECO employee with 2 years or less of service who their peers feels is a great addition to the team and sees great things in their future with DECO.

  • Anna Orfanidis, Budget Analyst, DECO Administration and Finance

You Make a World of Difference Award- recognizes the person who embraces the DECO culture, goes above and beyond to be friendly and increases morale, the person people most enjoy working with on a daily basis.

  • Linda Natale, Administrative Assistant, DECO Administration and Finance

The DECO Essential Piece Award- recognizes the person who exemplifies extraordinary customer service by consistently making superior contributions both to clients and to DECO by going above and beyond their day to day responsibilities.

  • Susan Wooden, Manager of Writing, Editing, and Technical Communications, Center for GIS

The 2011 Who’s Who Award Recipients:

After we concluded with the Who’s Who awards it was on to the Showstopper Award, The Excellence Award.

The Excellence Award is The Deco “crème de la crème” annual award.  This prestigious honor recognizes an individual who surpasses their current responsibilities and consistently excels in the following areas: innovation, developing new business opportunities, superior customer service, leadership potential, and valued by peers.    The nominees for these awards are nominated by Managers (however Staff are allowed to recommend a nominee to the manager) and the recipients are selected by a VP appointed panel of Directors;

The selection committee was unable to select one individual so we had two Excellence Award Winners for this year.

The 2011 Excellence Award Winners:

  • Sharon Seybold, Administrative Business Analyst, DECO Administration and Finance
  • Bobbie Laur, Manager of External Affairs and Strategic Communications, DECO Vice President’s Office

Overall this was a great time of reflection and acknowledgement.  DECO is proud of its employee’s longevity and achievements and recognizes that without their invaluable service and dedication, our division success would not be possible.  Congratulations to all our 2011 Service Award and Annual Awards Recipients!

Baltimore’s time to think big has arrived! TowsonGlobal and Baltimore area innovators are organizing the first annual Think Big Baltimore, an educational forum where entrepreneurs and investors get together to discuss ideas and opportunities for growth.

This day-long event, hosted at Towson University, will feature expert panel discussions, keynote speakers, and in-depth educational sessions.  Attendees also will have the opportunity to generate new connections, catch up with other entrepreneurs, and share ideas over cocktails and appetizers in a powerful networking session the evening before. Finally, guests will participate in CrowdPitch, an event where selected pitching companies will present in front of a panel of experts and an audience.  Audience attendees will receive $100 of fun money which they can “invest” in their favorite pitching company.   The winner will be selected based on who receives the most “money”.

Events like Think Big Baltimore keep entrepreneurial spirit alive, create more jobs, generate opportunities for start-ups and small businesses, encourage innovation, and promote competition—all necessary for the Greater Baltimore area’s growth and success.
