Guest Blogger: 2011 CUMU Conference focus on “Creating Tomorrow’s Future Today”

October 17, 2011

Nicole Schiraldi

Towson University is home to the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) Headquarters where I work as the Program Coordinator.  Members of CUMU use the power of their campuses in education, research, and service to enhance the communities in which they are located. Institutions located in metropolitan areas often do not fit the common definition of more traditional colleges and universities. With Bobbie Laur out of the office on maternity leave, I was left to fend for myself at the 17th Annual Conference.  The theme “Creating Tomorrow’s Future Today” focused on urban development and community engagement. This year’s host university location, Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), served as the perfect backdrop for a conference.

The conference agenda was full of exciting speakers and sessions, but I’d like to share my top 3 conference moments:

  1. Networking.  I have some of the most impressive university presidents in the country on my speed dial.  How many people can say that?  I met many incredibly influential people and networked all day and all night.
  2. Meeting the 2012 Superbowl Chairperson.  Indy is home to the 2012 Superbowl and the Bowl Chairperson, Allison Melangton, was our Opening Plenary speaker.  I am now following their blog and stories of community engagement – some of which are incredibly inspiring.
  3. Visiting the NCAA Hall of Fame.  Mark Emmert, president of the NCAA, and former ACE Fellow, was gracious enough to host our conference guests at the NCAA Hall of Fame for a casual dinner and tour.  The Hall of Fame showcases some of the best athletes in college sports.  My favorite part? The quote they live by, “There are over 400,000 NCAA student-athletes, and almost all of us will be going pro in something other than sports.”

“Mapping Out” Towson University’s Community Engagement

September 29, 2011

Kelsey

This is my first blog post and it is coming at a pretty great time. I have been in this new position for about a month and a half and finally feel like I know my way around TU in the Community. I have begun meeting with faculty and staff members and have even been working on a new feature that will be debuting soon!

One of the most useful features that I’ve found on TU in the Community is the Community Project Map.

With this map, you can enter an address to find community engagement projects close to you. You can click on the markers to learn about each opportunity. You can also be taken to the project listing within the TU in the Community database to find information about the project, contact information, and more.

It is a simple way to see what opportunities are available where you live or work and it’s a great way to see how you can get involved. As more faculty, staff, students and community members realize how great of a resource the TU in the Community website is, they can start collaborating with others on community engagement projects. It’s a win for everybody involved! Look at the map and get connected today.

For more information about the map or anything related to TU in the Community, contact  TUintheCommunity@towson.edu or 410-704-2678.

Guest Blog: Maryland Stem Cell Research Symposium

September 26, 2011

Dan Gincel

The Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund (MSCRF) has been promoting state-funded research and cures for the past five years. This year, we are partnering with Baltimore County, Stevenson University and Towson University to bring the 4th Annual Stem Cell Research Symposium to Towson University campus on Thursday, October 6, 2011.

The Symposium will feature remarks from policy makers such as Governor Martin O’Malley and Baltimore County Executive, Kevin Kamenetz, on how MSCRF research is creating jobs, expanding opportunities for Maryland graduates and changing the state and regional economy to become hi- and bio-tech driven.

The day will also include an unparalleled opportunity to:

  •  Learn about stem cell ethics issues such as embryonic stem cell dilemmas, animal/human chimeras and other hot topics that are covered in the media.
  • Listen to scientific talks that will cover topics from induced pluripotent stem cells, adult stem cells, clinical trials and many more all being performed right here in Maryland.
  • See 120 plus research posters summarizing years of progress towards finding cures to devastating diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune disease and many more.
  • Join a community of 600 symposium attendees all of whom are passionate about stem cell research and cures.

Please check out our agenda and join Towson’s Interim President, Marcia Welsh, and myself and be part of this great event!

Social Media for Entrepreneurs

August 25, 2011

Clay

Over the past few years, social media seems to have become an essential part in our lives.   Networking sites have changed the way we interact with the world.  While many sites were created mainly for personal uses, it did not take long for companies to discover the potential for business growth.

Amongst those who have benefited greatly from social media are entrepreneurs and small business owners.  Why?  Because of extensive reach and relatively low cost.   After all, sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn offer access to 1 billion users combined at minimal costs.  And while big corporations have the means to invest in large marketing campaigns to gain recognition, small businesses and start-ups must focus limited funds on more affordable resources.

Social media has become a key marketing tool allowing for more honed targeting of specific new markets.  It can help build awareness and exposure relatively rapidly both locally and internationally.

Lisa Drouillard, owner of My Hopeful Journey, a web-based application for managing infertility treatment programs, says, “Social media has been my primary method of connecting to both my customers and other stakeholders in the infertility community.  I have connected much more easily through social media than by making a cold call.”  Regarding the impact it has had, she says, “Without social media, launching My Hopeful Journey would have been nearly impossible.”

Mark McTamney, owner of BuffTees.com, a small graphic T-shirt company, adds that social media not only has made the process of attracting customers much more organic but also has facilitated customer interaction with the company, allowing him to be more responsive to customers’ needs.

Despite these benefits, many businesses do not explore social media’s full potential because of how time consuming it can be.  It takes time to create a plan that will be effective, and that will offer results over a short period.  People often mistakenly believe that their initiatives will pay off almost immediately while spending a limited amount of time online.  Nowadays, many companies are creating positions in social media marketing because of the important role it plays in gaining exposure and communicating with customers.

While many start-ups and small business owners cannot afford to hire additional employees, having someone dedicated to managing social media efforts could pay off in the long-term.  Both McTamney and Druillard agree that while they do not spend huge amounts of time online, they try to make the most out of their time networking.  “Social media is what I enjoy the most about my business” McTamney says.  “Interacting with my customers is the best part and it is probably the one thing I’d like to continue doing myself.”

Having a business page or blog does not guarantee success.  Like everything else, it takes time, effort, and planning to see results. As Druillard says, “You can’t just put up a Facebook page and expect people to find you”.

VIDEO: When Construction Meets Economics (Education Meets the Workforce)

August 8, 2011

Jenn

This marks my first blog post on TUOutreach.com. As you will see below, I will be introducing you to the latest video in our Education Meets the Workforce series, which features student interns.

Being a recent graduate and former student employee of Towson University, I am able to reflect on my experience. Not only was I learning about marketing and communication in my coursework at Towson University, but I was able to apply what I was learning in a non-academic setting. In other words, I was able to break down the barrier between “academia” and “the real world.”

I recently had the opportunity to participate in an interview with one of TU’s current student interns, Chaz Kerrigan. Through the interview with Chaz, I found that he too valued his experience as a student intern here at TU. Chaz’ internship is with the Maryland Center for Construction Education and Innovation (MCCEI), which is a non-profit entity that promotes the importance of the construction industry in Maryland.

Chaz defines himself as a “utility intern”, meaning that he performs many different hands-on roles at MCCEI. He is involved with managing databases that contain information about training and education for the industry, and he also assists MCCEI with demand studies, which relates to his major: economics. This experience is providing Chaz with real world experience, networking opportunities, exposure to companies within the local construction market, and the chance to see how economic principles are applied in the industry.
